Faith - The Two-legged Dog

She is a dog who was abandoned by her mother soon after birth, because dogs will push away offspring that are imperfect. She was born having only two legs. Luckly, she was adopted by a very good family who loves and feeds her. The biggest love her family gave was to teach her to stand up and walk with just her two legs. Now she can even walk as a human, hop as a rabbit, and jump as a kangaroo. She is amazing!
It is not an easy thing for a dog with a disability to walk, but she has been able to do this, and she affects most people with her happy spirit and strong will. We know it could be very hard for a dog with a disability to live in this competitive world, yet, now she is on the TV. Lots of people like her and dogs do, too. When she appears for people and dogs, she gets respect from them. Her owner even wrote a book about her. We could say she is a miracle!
She is named Faith, and as her name suggests, she gives others belief and hope.
You can know more about her in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSB9aBMayxU&feature=related

Ear-cropping and Tail-docking

Today, I saw a blog on The PETA. One posting talked about "ear-cropping and tail-docking" (here is the link http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/11/hey_animal_abus.php), which is done for some special breeds of dogs, because people think it will look good to cut off part of the dog's ear or tail. According to what I know, Schnauzers, Dobermanns and Rottweilers are the kinds which have ear-cropping and tail-docking done to them. Schnauzers and Dobermanns have part of their ears cut off, and Rottweilers have their tails entirely cut off when they are babies.
After these surgeries, people think these kinds of dog look better. People want dogs to look like what humans prefer, but we forget to consider the dogs' feelings. Do dogs really want to be cut? Do we ask them first? Of course we can't ask them; there is no such communication, but if we care about animals' rights, we will not do ear-cropping or tail-docking. We should not change a dog's body just for human preference.

The Number of Abandoned Pets in Changsha

I've heard from the Changsha Little Animal Protection Orgnization that there are about 100 call-in telephone requests each month from kind-hearted people who see stray dogs or cats.
This number is much more than I imagined it would be, but really it's only the number of strays that have been called in for rescue. It makes me think about how many stray dogs and cats have not been seen and reported.
If the number showing how many stray pets are on the street is 100 per month, there would be 1,200 a year, only in Changsha city! How many cities like Changsha are there in China? Let's count. There are about 260 cities like Changsha, and there are about 390 smaller cities. If we estimate the number of reports for the smaller cities as 50 rescue calls per month,
that would be:
1,200 X 260 + (50 X 12) X 390 = 312,000 + 234,000 = 546,000 rescue calls per year.
That's a lot! It means that more than five hundred thousand pets are stray each year in China.
Look at this number; what should we do?! Rescue all of the abandoned animals? We don't have the ability to do so. Instead, we should be proactive. We should encourage pet owners to have a sense of responsibility to care for pets as long as their dogs or cats are alive. This is a better way to avoid the huge number of abandoned animals.
Postscript:
Of course the number of rescue calls doesn't mean the one of strays, because sometimes several calls are from the same animal. Anyhow, this also shows a number, a big describing number for the stray pets.

People Abandon Their Pets on the Street

Why do people abandon their pets?
Sometimes people can't do the hard work of caring for pets. Maybe at first they only think the dog or cat is so cute and interesting, that without thinking about anythings else, they take it home. But after that, they find it's hard to keep the pet fed and clean; after some days, they don't want to do the work anymore. Feeling no real sense of responsibility for the poor little pet, the owner kicks it out of the home.
This could be one reason why there are so many abandoned dogs and cats in some animal care shelters. The main thing shelter orgnizations do is to find stray dogs and cats on the street and give them temporary care, and find new homes.
If we can't increase pet owners' sense of responsibility and reduce the number of abandoned pets, no matter how much shelter orgnizations try to do, there will still be too many stray dogs and cats.

Skateboarding Dog

I found a very interesting video on YouTube; it showed a dog playing with a skateboard. The dog could stand and keep balance on the board, and even control the direction of its movement. First he put two legs (front and hind) on the board and used the other legs to make the board move. When the board was going, the dog got on with all four legs. The video shows this in a place where lots of boys were skateboarding. The boys stopped to watch the dog, but it didn’t care about them. The dog was having too much fun!
Of course it's no doubt that the owner of this dog loves his pet and pays it a lot of attention, and is probably proud of his dog, who know how to ride a skateboard and really enjoys playing. There are many stories like this, all based on people loving and caring for their pets. In this case, the dog’s owner doesn’t treat his pet as an animal; the dog is a member of the family.

We Need More Activities

According to social theories, there are formal and informal ties between individuals. Formal ties mean the relationship between people in an orgnization, while informal ties are more casual, as between acquaintances, friends, parents and children, or between relatives, etc.
There are also strong and weak ties. If a person is actively participating in an orgnization, or casual relationship, we can say that ties are strong, but if a person only complies to rules without any contribution to an orgnization or relationship, the tie is weak.
For our decleration of animal protection, we need activities with strong ties, so we can do more things for the animals. We need individuals who will take initiative to move ahead, rather than just a passively accept the idea of animal protection.

Vegeterian

From the word, we know vegeterians only eat vegetables and no meat products, usually because they love animals, even farm animals. Today, I know there are also people who are vegan, which means they even do without food and clothing derived from animals. For more information about vegans, you can go to this website:

Dog Was Not Good at Year of Dog

Two yesrs ago before this Year of Mouse--Year of Dog maybe not a good year for dog, because some dogs were been send as present or bought for the name of the year with owner who didn't have patient to feed them long enough.
Because of more and more stray dogs and cats, an association was been found for these poor little animal, but this is not enough. If we don't change the people's attitude who have little responsibility to their pets, there will be more and more stray animals in the street.
Though this news was two years ago, we still feel sorry to look at it.
